What this checks
Texas appraisal districts only apply most exemptions when the owner applies, and they don’t always know when someone turns 65, becomes disabled, or receives a VA rating. A missing exemption costs money every year it’s missing.
| Exemption | Who it’s for | What it’s worth |
|---|---|---|
| Residence homestead | Owners who live in the home as their main residence | $140,000 off for school taxes, local exemptions, and a 10% yearly cap |
| Age 65 or older | Homestead owners 65 or older | Another $60,000 off for school taxes, local exemptions, and a school tax ceiling |
| Disabled person | Homestead owners who meet the Social Security disability definition | Same as 65 or older; you can have one or the other for school taxes |
| Disabled veteran | Veterans with a VA disability rating of 10% or more | $5,000 to $12,000 off by rating, or the full homestead value at 100% |
The check also shows the county’s description of your home. If the size, rooms, or year built are wrong, your value may be too.
